Meet Ernie!
Every once in a while, a dog comes along who is so effortlessly wonderful that you wonder how on earth he ever ended up needing rescue.
Ernie is one of those dogs.
At just 1 year old, Ernie is a handsome little mixed-breed boy with long, lanky legs, gorgeous wispy fur, and a fluffy tail that somehow manages to shed next to nothing. He's goofy, playful, ridiculously affectionate, and has the kind of easygoing personality that makes him a joy to have around.
But Ernie's story began with heartbreak.
He was found on the side of a road in Hurst, Texas, faithfully lying beside his best friend, a pittie mix who had tragically been struck and killed by a car. We don't know how long Ernie stayed by his companion's side, but when he first came into our rescue, he was understandably shell-shocked and withdrawn.
Thankfully, a little love goes a long way.
Once Ernie realized his foster home was full of good food, patient humans, comfy places to sleep, and friends around every corner, he blossomed into an absolute social butterfly. The timid little dog we first met has transformed into a confident, happy-go-lucky goofball who seems to believe that everyone he meets is his new best friend.
And we mean EVERYONE.
Ernie is **supremely dog friendly, cat friendly, and even gets along beautifully with farm animals.** He knows no foes and has an almost comical ability to make himself right at home wherever he goes. He loves people of all ages, from children to seniors, and has never shown us any separation anxiety or concerning behavioral quirks.
He's also got the house manners to match that stellar personality. Ernie is perfectly house trained, walks nicely on a leash, has great recall, and is a wonderful car companion. He's playful without being overwhelming, affectionate without being demanding, and wonderfully adaptable to whatever the day has in store.
Want to go hiking? Ernie's in.
Road trip? He's already calling shotgun.
Spend a lazy Sunday on the couch? Perfect. Ernie will happily volunteer to be your personal weighted blanket.
And speaking of snuggling, this boy LOVES affection. He's an expert cuddler who would very much appreciate a standing invitation to sleep in the human bed, preferably tucked right up against his favorite person. Personal space is optional when Ernie is involved.
The Ernie rundown:
- 1 year old, small mixed breed with soft, wispy, low-shedding fur
- Extremely friendly with dogs, cats, farm animals, and humans of all ages
- Perfectly house trained, great on leash, with excellent recall
- Adaptable, playful, affectionate, and comfortable being left alone
- Neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative
Ernie would absolutely thrive in a home with another friendly dog, but he'd also be perfectly content as someone's one and only. He's the kind of dog who could fit beautifully into just about any lifestyle, whether that's a family with children, a retired couple looking for a devoted companion, or an active household that wants a little adventure buddy.
He's genuinely the full package.
It's hard not to think about the little dog who refused to leave his fallen friend behind. Watching that same dog discover that life can still be full of love, friendship, and joy has been one of the sweetest transformations.
Ernie has already lost someone he loved. Now we'd like to find him a family who will love him just as faithfully as he loves them.
He's sweet. He's silly. He's beautifully uncomplicated. And he's ready to be somebody's very best friend again.

Adoption process: After your phone screening, we can schedule a meet and greet/the start of your foster-to-adopt trial. All adoptions have a 2 week minimum foster-to-adopt trial to make sure that the pet is the right fit for your home, and vice versa. Ernie's adoption fee is $300, which would be due after the foster-to-adopt period. If you are located outside of Texas, we offer to-your-door transportation and have so many happy families as references.
